Leon Stavrinakis’ Resolution helps kill plan to sell 1,100 acres of Francis Marion National Forest
Earlier this year, Leon Stavrinakis drafted and passed the County Council Resolution opposing the Bush administration’s decision to sell off acres inside the forest.
The resolution said any sale of the forest would encourage sprawl, threaten the forest's integrity, increase congestion and damage the environment county residents love.
Chairman Stavrinakis was quoted as saying, "I'm not willing to sacrifice an important part of Charleston County to fill the federal coffers," he said. "If we don't speak up, who will?"
The Resolution proposed by Chairman Stavrinakis was then sent to members of the state’s congressional delegation, and earlier this week the Bush proposal was left out of a spending bill by the Senate- thus ending the opportunity to sell off acres of forest land.
